When is the 2026 midterm election?
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Every seat in the U.S. House, 35 U.S. Senate seats, 36 governorships, and thousands of state and local offices are on the ballot. Most states also offer early voting or mail voting in the weeks before.
How do I know if I am registered to vote?
Every state has an official registration lookup. Enter your ZIP code above and use the "Check your registration" link for your state. Check even if you have voted before: registrations lapse after a move or a name change, and some states remove inactive voters.
What if I miss my registration deadline?
Twenty-one states and Washington, D.C. let you register and vote on the same day, including on Election Day, and North Dakota has no registration at all. In the other states you will have to wait for the next election, so check your deadline now.
Can I vote by mail?
Eight states and Washington, D.C. mail a ballot to every registered voter automatically. Most others let any voter request a mail ballot without giving a reason, and a few still require an excuse such as travel or illness. Your state guide above shows which applies and the deadline to request one.
Do I need ID to vote?
It depends on the state. Some require a photo ID, some accept non-photo documents like a utility bill, and some verify your identity by signature. Your state guide lists exactly what to bring and what happens if you do not have it.
